Garages are being reminded of the risks involved in fitting customer-supplied parts, with the Independent Garage Association warning that workshops remain responsible for ensuring any vehicle they work on is safe to drive.
While customers may provide their own components in an effort to save money, garages have no guarantee that those parts are suitable, safe or fit for purpose. If a fault occurs after installation, the garage could still face liability, even where the customer has signed a waiver or been told the business accepts no responsibility for the supplied part.
The IGA says refusing to fit a customer-supplied part can be the safest course of action, protecting the business, its technicians and the motorist. The association has worked with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) on the video Unsafe Car Parts: What Garages Want Drivers to Know, which highlights the potential consequences of fitting parts supplied by customers.
