The Valeo Stop-Start Systems – 20 Years of Innovative Technology

By autotech-nic on March 21, 2024

The automotive industry is continuously evolving, with a strong focus on developing technologies that enhance fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact. One such innovation that has gained prominence is the Valeo stop-start StARS (Starter Alternator Reversible System) which has been in production for 20 years in 2024. This advanced system goes beyond the capabilities of standard alternators, offering an intelligent approach to managing a vehicle’s power supply and reducing fuel consumption.

By seamlessly stopping and restarting the engine when necessary, the Valeo stop-start StARS system combined a vehicles starter and alternator and transformed the way vehicles operate, paving the way for a more sustainable and economical driving experience and becoming a real game changer in the automotive industry. The Valeo stop-start StARS system also received the prestigious PACE award in 2006. The PACE Award is an annual award from Automotive News. The focus of the award is an innovation developed primarily by a supplier that is new to the automotive industry, that is in use (e.g., used on a vehicle in production), and that “changes the rules of the game”.

Power management

As the automotive industry continues to embrace innovation and sustainability, stop-start technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of vehicle power management. With ongoing advancements and integration into a broad spectrum of vehicles, the Valeo stop-start StARS system held the potential to drive significant fuel savings, reduce emissions, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable automotive landscape. Through collaborative efforts and ongoing research, Valeo continued to build on stop-start technologies, ushering in a new era of efficient and environmentally conscious mobility.

Valeo has continued to lead the way over the last 20 years with the development of i-StARS, ReStart, and – most recently – 48-volt i-BSG stop-start systems. The 48-volt i-BSG acts as a regenerative braking system, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy during deceleration and storing it in the vehicles battery for later use, such as a power boost during acceleration.

Valeo is the only manufacturer to provide four stop-start rotating electric solutions for OE and the aftermarket.
