Valeo says that due to modern vehicles using shared thermal loops, software-driven compressors and stacked heat exchangers that blend cabin comfort with drivetrain cooling, workshops can expect customers complaining of their EVs charging more slowly on hot days and their air con ‘seeming fine' but not staying cold. There’s often no fault code, leak or dashboard warning yet the fans are howling. “We had a hybrid where the A/C was perfect on paper — the compressor worked, gas pressure was spot-on. But the car was diverting cooling to the inverter,” recalls a master tech from Leicester.
New cars, new heat logic
More heat sources: Inverters, turbochargers, LED modules, ADAS cameras.
Tighter packaging: Less airflow to the condenser and radiator stack.
Shared loops: Cabin A/C and drivetrain cooling often run on the same refrigerant circuit.
Software management: Thermal controllers redistribute cooling dynamically.
A simple 'hot day' issue might have nothing to do with refrigerant — and everything to do with how the system allocates it.
Diagnosing Smart Cooling
1. Start with the air path
Blocked condenser fins or insect debris reduce A/C performance long before pressures look wrong. Valeo testing shows just 15% airflow loss can raise system pressure by 30%.
2. Measure condenser efficiency
Use a surface probe or IR gun. A healthy Valeo multi-flow condenser shows a clear temperature drop across the core.
3. Validate sensor readings
Cabin or evaporator sensors drifting just a few degrees can trick the ECU into cutting compressor duty.
Valeo’s A/C compressors and condensers are designed for the thermal complexity of today’s compact, multi-loop vehicles – variable displacement compressors reduce drag and maintain cooling at idle. High-efficiency condensers use multi-flow microchannels for consistent performance in restricted airflow. OE-grade durability ensures quiet operation and long life, tested under vibration and heat cycles. The manufacturer says that understanding modern heat management is crucial to avoid misdiagnosing ‘ghost overheating’ or weak A/C and unnecessary compressor swaps. The Valeo Tech Academy provides courses on A/C system diagnostics, thermal software logic, and compressor control.
